Background

As Ukraine’s largest telecom operator, Kyivstar manages a vast network serving over 26 million mobile subscribers and 1 million broadband users. With growing reliance on digital connectivity, its backbone infrastructure became a prime target for DDoS threats that could disrupt both internal systems and customer services. Kyivstar needed a carrier-grade solution to safeguard high-capacity border routers, preserve service continuity, and protect its reputation for secure, reliable communications.

Solution

With the support of its local strategic partner Broksteam, Kyivstar has managed to protect its FTTB core infrastructure against DDoS threats through Genie’s solution. Kyivstar deployed GenieATM to monitor and protect traffic across its four major border routers, supporting an aggregated downstream bandwidth of more than 1 Tbps. GenieATM detects anomalies in real time and automatically triggers BGP announcements to divert malicious traffic toward scrubbing appliances or blackholes, ensuring threats are contained before reaching critical infrastructure. Beyond protection, Kyivstar leverages GenieATM to deliver managed security services—offering enterprise customers access to traffic reports, DDoS visibility, and mitigation as subscription-based service.

Outcome

With GenieATM, Kyivstar has reinforced the resilience of its core FTTB infrastructure while enabling value-added services for its enterprise customers. Automated detection and mitigation minimize operational risk and service disruption, while the managed service model generates new revenue streams. The deployment enhances Kyivstar’s role as Ukraine’s most trusted provider of secure, large-scale connectivity.
