The 52nd JANOG meeting, involving technical seminar and exhibition, concluded successfully last week. The meeting attracted nearly 2,000 participants, including network engineers, operations personnel, and technical experts, both online and in-person. The JANOG meeting, held twice a year, is one of the most significant technical forums in Japan’s telecommunications and network operation industry. The event featured numerous leading Japanese and international telecommunications operators and networking giants. As a Gold sponsor of the event, Genie Networks showcased its flagship products, GenieATM for network traffic monitoring and DDoS detection, and GenieAnalytics for big data network traffic analytics. The booth demonstrations highlighted how these products can be applied to Botnet Command and Control (C&C) server threat analysis and various network-related business analyses.

Botnet Command and Control (C&C) server threats have become prevalent in recent years as a common method of network attacks, particularly Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that utilize botnets. At booth, Genie Networks demonstrated how GenieATM can be used for Botnet C&C analysis:

1. 1. Collect comprehensive network traffic data and information about known C&C servers.
2. 2. Identify botnet host addresses through the collected data and build a Bot host IP reputation list.
3. 3. Continuously extract data features from collected normal network traffic data, known C&C server traffic data, and bot host traffic data to train the system’s built-in machine learning model.
4. 4. Utilize the built-in machine learning model in GenieATM to identify undiscovered C&C servers, and share this information in real-time with other GenieATM systems through cloud sharing.
5. 5. With the information of C&C servers detected through machine learning, more effective defensive measures can be taken against Botnet C&C, such as disconnecting the connection between hosts and C&C servers. This approach enables efficient protection from attacks originating from Botnet C&C through proactive prevention instead of passive defense.

With the rise of innovative services such as Over-the-Top (OTT), Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), new challenges arise for next-generation network traffic analysis. Advanced traffic analysis should possess the ability to trace and identify business-critical data related to OTT applications, CDN information, and subscriber identities. GenieAnalytics Deep Trace, through correlation between IP flow data and Genie’s corresponding database, automatically identifies various OTT-related services (including streaming media, web applications, gaming, e-commerce, etc.), provides insights into the flow distribution of CDN traffic across the entire network, and offers information on subscriber identity. These analyses assist network operators in accurately planning products and services aligned with market trends, analyzing the cost-effectiveness of various network application services, securing customer retention, and optimizing network planning and service offerings.

JANOG, short for Japan Network Operator’s Group, is a technical forum that brings together local Japanese professionals in network engineering, operations, and technology. The 2023 CYBERSEC exhibition concluded successfully last week, bringing together over 300 domestic and international cybersecurity brands, with a record-high attendance of over 12,000 people. As a Gold sponsor, Genie Networks held its first Brand Day event, which featured a series of sessions showcasing its product technology and customer success stories.

At the booth Tech Demo, Genie showcased its two main products: the GenieATM network traffic analysis and DDoS detection system, and the GenieAnalytics big data intelligent traffic analysis platform. GenieATM is a professional-grade network analysis management system specifically designed for telecom/network operator/data center-grade networks. It helps analyze network operator business decisions and perform real-time threat detection to strengthen network security. GenieAnalytics is a high-flexibility and scalable big data intelligent traffic analytics solution that provides operational optimization and security analytics for large-scale networks through powerful big-data processing capabilities and multi-dimensional traffic analytics.

Genie’s Brand Day featured four consecutive sessions, introducing how intelligent network traffic analysis can overcome various new network demands and challenges for telecom operators and large enterprises. The first session presented by Jacob Chiang, CTO of Genie, explained how to correlate heterogeneous data sources and perform multi-dimensional traffic analytics to help network operators quickly obtain key operational insights, improve network security and user experience. The 2nd session was presented by Chim Pan, Senior Technical Manager of Genie, who introduced some possible methods of monitoring and analysis surrounding the BGP protocol, and how these methods enhance network routing security and stability from a technical perspective. The 3rd session was delivered by the Sales VP of Genie Networks – Flora Chen, along with, Technical director Wong, and Senior Technical Manager Stanley Tang. The three shared several customer success stories of tier-1 network operators in the APAC, and discussed how they use Genie’s end-to-end network traffic intelligence to manage and optimize their massive traffic with a fast and low-cost deployment, and effectively defend against DDoS attacks. The final session was presented by Genie’s Technical Director Charles Chen, who introduced how to use network traffic data to implement layer-7 application analysis without deploying high-cost devices such as network probes, and how this analysis is used as a best practice for revenue strategy and user satisfaction enhancement.

This year’s CYBERSEC has come to a successful end. Through Genie’s first-ever Brand Day, we hope that everyone has gained a deeper understanding of the importance and necessity of intelligent traffic analysis in network operations, planning, and security.
